Best GEO Books for 2026: Generative Engine Optimization Reading Guide

8 min read

Disclosure: Nathan Gotch, Rankability’s co-founder and CEO, wrote AI SEO For Dummies, the first book on this list. Treat that pick as a recommendation from the author’s company, not an independent review. If you want a book that is only about GEO, our honest pick is Ross Hudgens’ Generative Engine Optimization, which is second on this list.

In this guide, GEO means generative engine optimization: improving how often generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot mention, recommend and cite your brand. It’s not about geography or GIS books.

GEO overlaps heavily with answer engine optimization (AEO). If that’s the term you use, see our guide to the best AEO books.

How We Chose These Books

We looked for books that treat generative AI answers as the main subject, come from an established publisher or an author with a clear practitioner track record, and are available in the US in print or ebook. Many short self-published GEO titles appeared in 2025 and 2026; we left out the ones we couldn’t verify. Fewer, better picks beat a long list.

We don’t publish star ratings or review counts because most of these books are new and have very few public reviews so far.

1. AI SEO For Dummies

Best for: Beginners, business owners and marketers who want one book that covers GEO and AEO step by step.

AI SEO For Dummies (Wiley, 2026) by Nathan Gotch is a beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide to AI SEO, covering both AEO and GEO, with a free companion toolkit for tracking your brand in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity.

The print edition was published on September 22, 2026, and runs 368 pages across 24 chapters. Chapter 3 lays out your first 30 days, and the rest of the book follows a campaign from measurement through execution.

The chapters most relevant to GEO are:

  • Chapter 2, Understanding How Search Works Now
  • Chapter 6, Setting Up Your AI Search Dashboard
  • Chapter 7, Using Competitive Intelligence for AI Search
  • Chapter 8, Conducting Experiments That Don’t Fool You
  • Chapter 16, Identifying Signals That Move AI Systems
  • Chapter 18, Owning the Topic
  • Chapter 20, Earning Links, Mentions, and Citations

Keep in mind: It uses “AI SEO” as the umbrella term rather than putting GEO in the title, and it’s written for people new to the topic. If you already run GEO programs, a dedicated GEO book will go further on that one framework.

See the official book page and the free companion toolkit.

2. Generative Engine Optimization (Ross Hudgens)

Best for: Readers who want a book entirely about GEO.

This is the most direct answer to “what is the best GEO book?” if you want a dedicated title. Ross Hudgens is the founder and CEO of Siege Media, a content marketing agency, and Generative Engine Optimization: The Definitive Guide to AI SEO is published by Wiley.

Siege describes the book as a guide to getting cited and ranking in AI search, organized into nine chapters with frameworks and three case studies (Zapier, Bluevine and Siege Media). It’s written for SEO practitioners and marketing leaders adapting existing SEO and content workflows to AI-driven search.

Keep in mind: It’s brand new in fall 2026, so check your retailer for format availability. It assumes you already know SEO basics.

3. The New Rules of AI Search (Crystal Carter)

Best for: Marketers who want to understand visibility inside AI assistants.

Crystal Carter is head of AI search and SEO communications at Wix. Her Wiley book, The New Rules of AI Search: SEO for Visibility in ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Generative Search, came out in 2026 and is framed around generative search from the start.

Keep in mind: It takes a broad view of AI search, so readers who want a detailed operating plan may want to pair it with another book on this list.

4. CITED (Chris McCarron)

Best for: Practitioners who want a free audit tool to use alongside the book.

Chris McCarron runs GoGoChimp, a Glasgow conversion optimization agency, and self-published CITED in 2026. It focuses on getting a business recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. Buyers get Rubric, a free AI SEO audit tool that, according to the publisher, checks AI crawler access, server-rendered schema and per-engine page scores.

Keep in mind: It’s self-published and written from an agency’s perspective. The companion tool is a big part of its value, so it suits readers who will actually run the audits.

5. Answer Engine Optimization (Rodrigo Stockebrand)

Best for: Technical readers who want to understand how AI systems pick sources.

It uses the AEO label, but Rodrigo Stockebrand’s O’Reilly book covers the mechanics every GEO program depends on: how language models retrieve, evaluate and decide which sources to include in an answer, plus semantic HTML, structured data and topical authority. Stockebrand has more than 18 years of experience as an SEO and AEO practitioner and trainer.

Keep in mind: O’Reilly pitches it at intermediate to advanced readers.

Other GEO Titles You’ll See

You’ll also find Generative Engine Optimization: Beyond SEO in the Age of AI by Emanuel Rose (self-published, second edition 2024), plus a growing number of short self-published GEO playbooks. Check the publication date and the author’s track record before buying, because GEO practice changed a lot between 2024 and 2026.

Which GEO Book Should You Read First?

  • If you’re new to AI search: Start with AI SEO For Dummies.
  • If you already know SEO and want a dedicated GEO framework: Start with Hudgens’ Generative Engine Optimization.
  • If you want to understand how AI systems choose sources: Add Stockebrand’s Answer Engine Optimization.
  • If you want a tool to audit your pages as you read: Choose CITED.

Whichever you pick, measure the result. GEO only pays off if you can see whether AI platforms mention and cite your brand more often. Rankability’s AI visibility tracker does that across platforms, and you can compare plans here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Does GEO Mean in These Books?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: improving how often generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity mention, recommend and cite your brand. It has nothing to do with geography.

What Is the Best Book on Generative Engine Optimization?

For a dedicated GEO book, Ross Hudgens’ Generative Engine Optimization: The Definitive Guide to AI SEO (Wiley, 2026) is the strongest choice. For a beginner-friendly, step-by-step guide that covers GEO and AEO together with a free companion toolkit, choose AI SEO For Dummies by Nathan Gotch, Rankability’s co-founder.

What Is the Best GEO Book for Beginners?

AI SEO For Dummies is written for beginners and includes a 30-day starting plan in Chapter 3. Hudgens’ book assumes more SEO experience.

Is GEO Different From AEO?

The terms overlap heavily. GEO usually describes optimizing for generative AI systems broadly, while AEO focuses on being used and cited in AI answers. Most of the books on this list cover both, whichever label they use.

Is This List Independent?

No. Rankability’s co-founder wrote AI SEO For Dummies, which is why we disclose it at the top. We’ve named Hudgens’ book as the best dedicated GEO title because that’s the most useful answer for readers who want one.
