A criminal defense firm needs to be found for the matters it handles in the jurisdictions it serves. An agency that appears in a national AI answer may still be a poor fit for that brief. We asked 11 AI platforms which AEO agencies they would name for criminal lawyers, then reviewed the usable answers and extracted agency labels.

We asked 11 AI platforms the same question: “who are the best AEO agencies for criminal lawyers?” The export contains 11 dated platform records from October 11, 2026 (UTC). We recorded the agency names and the pages cited, then combined aliases and separated identifiable agency businesses from software, individuals, client examples, and names we could not confirm.

Capture limitation: Google AI Overview failed in this run and supplied no answer, agency labels, or citations. Its column is marked unavailable, not absent. The other 10 platforms supplied usable answers. Coverage percentages retain the 11 configured-platform denominator for consistency with the cluster; a failed capture cannot establish whether an agency was recommended.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) helps a business become visible in AI-generated answers. This report measures agency mentions in one capture. It does not evaluate service quality, verify claims made by the AI answers, or predict campaign results.

Rankability is software, not an agency. This is an industry edition of our SaaS AEO agency research. The two reports use different capture dates; this edition ranks by platform coverage because this export does not include structured mention positions for every agency.

Key findings

  1. AEO Engine, First Page Sage, Juris Digital tied for the widest platform coverage. Each was named by 6 of 11 platforms. Coverage is incomplete for one platform; the gap does not show a confirmed absence.
  2. The identified roster contains 48 agencies. They account for 92 distinct agency/platform pairs. 30 appeared on only one platform. Names without a confirmed agency identity are excluded from these totals.
  3. Gemini supplied the longest identified shortlist: 23 agencies. One platform record is unavailable for comparison; see the capture limitation above.
  4. The citation pool contains 50 distinct pages. The most widely cited page was on aeoengine.ai, appearing in 5 platform citation lists. A citation to a page is different from a mention of the agency that published it.

Agency visibility does not establish criminal defense expertise

The captured answers mix legal marketing businesses with broader search providers. They also name software, directories, and law firms used as client examples; those labels do not automatically belong in an agency roster. We confirm marketing service identities and keep the exclusions inspectable.

A recurring agency name is evidence of visibility for this question. It does not prove criminal defense experience, successful case intake, or a shortage of qualified specialists. Preserve this edition as a baseline: later captures can show whether specialist names gain ground, while separate work examples are needed to evaluate their expertise.

The leaderboard

The first 16 agencies below are sorted by distinct platform coverage. Coverage is the number of captured platform answers naming the agency divided by 11. The No. column numbers the list from 1 to 16; it is not a separate performance rank. Agencies with equal coverage are tied and appear alphabetically. If a tie crosses the 16-row boundary, alphabetical order determines which tied names appear here; the full roster is linked below. This is an AI visibility comparison, not a ranking of agency capabilities.

What the cited pages show

Across the 11 platform records, we recorded 50 distinct cited pages. The table shows the 10 cited by the most platforms, with ties ordered by URL. A page can discuss several agencies, and its publisher may not be named in the answer. Citation counts therefore do not substitute for agency coverage.

These links come from the export. Display labels use the captured titles, with URL-derived labels when a title is missing, is a placeholder, or contains an excerpt rather than a descriptive page title. The JSON and source CSV preserve the original titles. This is not an independent evaluation of every page. Pages may change or disappear after capture. A source’s inclusion does not establish that its claims are accurate.

Agency-owned roundups and mentions

For an additional check, we matched cited domains to the known agency websites in this roster. We then selected titles or URL paths that identify a “best” or “top” agency, company, firm, or consultant list. This is a title/URL classification, not a full editorial review of the pages. The table includes only matched agency-owned roundup pages; unmatched domains are not assigned an owner.

How to evaluate an AEO partner

Start with the firm’s jurisdictions, matter types, and intake capacity. Ask a potential partner to demonstrate a plan for that scope rather than substitute a national agency-hiring mention for local client discovery.

Evidence to request before hiring

Evidence to request before hiring
PriorityEvidence to requestOutcome to measure
Jurisdictions and mattersA prompt set and page plan covering the courts, locations, and criminal matters the firm actually handlesRelevant inquiries by jurisdiction and matter type
Attorney-reviewed informationA named reviewer for attorney biographies, practice descriptions, process explanations, and advertising claimsAccurate published information and corrected misleading descriptions
Calls and intakeA documented path from mobile page or call to intake, with suitable-inquiry definitions and ownershipAnswered calls, suitable consultations, and retained matters reported separately
Inspectable reportingDated AI answers, cited pages, named competitors, and a record of unavailable capturesRepeated visibility measures alongside qualified intake outcomes

Build the brief around where and how the firm practices

Separate DUI, other misdemeanor, and felony discovery questions where those categories match the practice. Add the actual jurisdictions instead of publishing interchangeable city pages. Ask who will maintain office information, attorney profiles, and service descriptions when the firm’s scope changes. The broad question measured here has no location configured, so it cannot tell you which firm is recommended in a particular county.

Make attorney review part of delivery

The agency should show who checks legal explanations and advertising claims before publication. ABA Model Rule 7.1 addresses false or misleading communications about a lawyer’s services. It is a model reference; the firm’s attorneys should apply the rules governing their own practice. Ask how corrections reach the website and other profiles when information changes.

Follow discovery through to suitable intake

A person researching an attorney’s experience needs different information from someone trying to contact a firm immediately. Review both journeys on a phone. Establish how calls and forms reach intake, what makes an inquiry suitable, and how the firm records consultations and retained matters. A change in AI mentions is a visibility signal; it cannot establish a change in case acquisition without that separate evidence.

Example client questions to track

These are illustrative client questions, not questions measured in the October 11 agency-hiring capture. Replace placeholders with the client’s actual services, audiences, and locations.

  • Which criminal defense lawyers handle [matter type] in [county or city]?
  • Which firms offer consultations for [matter type] in [jurisdiction]?
  • Where can I verify [attorney or firm]’s practice areas and credentials?
  • How can I contact [firm] about a criminal defense consultation?
  • Which attorneys explain the court process for [matter type] in [jurisdiction]?

What this means if you run an agency

For agencies serving criminal defense firms, treat your own appearance in a hiring shortlist as a separate measurement from the client’s local discovery. Build a repeatable reporting process around the firm’s real scope and suitable intake.

  1. Define the actual brief. Record the jurisdictions, matter types, attorney reviewers, and next steps the firm can support. Keep that client prompt set separate from the agency-hiring question.
  2. Review the supporting pages. Compare attorney profiles, practice pages, office information, and cited sources. Use our AI search visibility checklist to organize the work.
  3. Keep the historical baseline. Save dated answers and changes to the roster. Compare those with suitable inquiries and consultations before attributing a visibility change to a campaign.

Methodology

Capture settings

  • Prompt: “who are the best AEO agencies for criminal lawyers”
  • Capture date: October 11, 2026 (UTC). Exact timestamps and saved-record provenance are retained in the downloadable JSON.
  • Coverage: 11 tracked-platform records, including one unavailable record described above.
  • Source: one completed October 11, 2026 Rankability Tracker run, retrieved through the Rankability MCP on the same day. Ten platforms supplied usable answers; Google AI Overview failed. The original answers and extracted labels are preserved in the downloads.
  • Language: the captured answers are in English. No location was configured for this broad agency-hiring prompt. Exact model versions and personalization settings are not supplied in the saved results, so we do not assume them.

Agency identification and name cleanup

We use Tracker’s detected-brand labels and sentiment records, excluding records explicitly marked as not mentioned, cross-check agency identities against official business websites, and combine known aliases. The roster includes identifiable marketing service businesses; software-only labels, individuals, client examples, and unresolved identities are excluded. We do not assume that an AI description of an agency’s expertise is true. Some provider answer text does not preserve every visible name or link; the recorded entity labels are retained with the original answer text so readers can inspect that limitation.

This report excludes 10 distinct canonical entity names, including 0 whose agency identity was not confirmed. The excluded-entity CSV records each excluded label, platform, reason, and saved-record reference. Excluded names are not included in the agency or mention totals. The counts are therefore specific to the identified roster, not an exhaustive count of all marketing businesses that may be represented in the raw answers.

Aliases combined in this capture:

  • Dashing Digital Marketing: Dashing Digital, Dashing Digital Marketing.
  • Grow Law Marketing: Grow Law, Grow Law Marketing.
  • iLawyer Marketing: iLawyerMarketing.

Metrics and ties

  • Platforms naming an agency: the number of distinct platform entity lists containing its normalized name. Repeated names and aliases within one platform count once.
  • Visibility: platform count ÷ 11 × 100, rounded to the nearest whole percent.
  • Agency/platform mentions: the sum of platform counts across the identified roster; this is not the number of repeated text mentions.
  • List number: sequential numbering in the displayed leaderboard. Equal coverage is tied; alphabetical order within a tie does not indicate better performance.
  • Rank in the downloads: descending platform coverage, with equal coverage sharing rank. Names within a tie appear alphabetically.
  • Cited pages: distinct recorded URL strings across the answer citation lists and consolidated citation records. Equivalent URLs with different strings are not silently merged.
  • Mention positions and scores: not reported. The saved export’s tracked-brand position field is not structured agency-position data. The source citation score is also not an agency score.

Editorial research update

This edition uses the October 11 Tracker detected-brand labels and sentiment records returned through the Rankability MCP. Those records support agency identification, not a semantic keyword score or an assessment of specialist expertise. The earlier standalone criminal-lawyer entity report was unsuccessful and is not used as evidence. The selection questions are editorial guidance, with the ABA model reference linked above.

Limitations

This is one question, one capture date, and one record per tracked platform, including one unavailable record. Answers can change with time, model, settings, and user context. The study does not measure hiring suitability, customer satisfaction, lead volume, service quality, or the accuracy of every recommendation. Agency identification and alias choices affect the roster. Missing or unresolved identities can change the ranking if confirmed later. Citations and mentions describe co-occurrence; they do not establish causation.
